TMJ/TMD Treatment

What is TMJ?

The Temporomandibular Joint is a small but important joint that connects the skull to the lowerjaw. It works together with other jaw muscles and allows us to speak, swallow, chew, or yawn.

What is TMJ Disorder?

A slight disorientation between the TMJ, jaw muscles, and ligaments prevent them from working together causing TMJ Disorder or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). This is a painful condition that leaves you uncomfortable (especially when opening your mouth in the morning). Some people suffer from severe headache while others complain of a constant ringing sound in the ear.

Although there’s not much clarity on the factors that cause TMJ, researchers have attributed the problem to certain issues like arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, injury/accident, stress, and misalignment of the teeth. Sometimes, the problem is caused by a displaced disc that’s located between the jaw bone and the socket. Grinding or clenching the teeth also causes TMJ.

Symptoms:

Common symptoms that indicate TMJ disorder include:

  • Severe headache and/or neck ache
  • Ear pain or a ringing sound heard in the ear
  • Pain in the jaw joint or jaw muscles
  • Difficulty in opening or closing your mouth

TMJ Treatment

More often than not, TMJ disorders are difficult to diagnose without the help of a trained dentist. Depending on the cause of the TMJ disorder and the severity of the problem, dentists suggest surgical and non-surgical treatments. The latter includes pain relief medication, night guards, and hot/cold compresses. Surgery is often suggested as a last resort or in severe cases of TMJ.
